DXM abuse, also known as “robotripping” or “skittling,” is taking extremely large doses of over-the-counter (or nonprescription) cough medicine to try to get high. The “high” is a result of taking a large amount of dextromethorphan (DXM), a common active ingredient found in many over-the-counter cough medicines. This type of abuse — whether it’s called cough medicine abuse, dextromethorphan abuse, DXM abuse or something else — can be dangerous.
